Raising Farm Kids: A Family Life Rooted in the Land
One of the greatest privileges we have as parents is being able to raise our children on a working farm. We’ve always encouraged them to be as involved as possible in the day-to-day life here — not just to lend a hand, but to truly grow up understanding the rhythms, challenges, and joys that come with farming.
Our eldest, Rosie, is well on her way to building her own little empire. Her flock of chickens and ducks are proudly hers, not to mention her two inseparable lambs, Minty and Wiggles, who follow her around like loyal companions. At just 11 years old, Rosie’s work ethic is already shining through. Last Christmas, when we were knee-deep in poultry processing, she eagerly stepped up to help — taking on the role of giblet processing with impressive focus (and maybe a bit of motivation from the promise of pizza afterward!).
Then there’s Alice — our sparkle in the mud. She brings a unique blend of glam and grit to the farm. She’s not afraid to get her hands dirty, but you can bet she’ll be doing it in a dress and with a touch of sass. She reminds us daily that there’s no one way to be a farmer, and that individuality belongs everywhere, even in the fields.
William, our youngest, is deeply curious and already showing a real interest in the orchard. Apple harvest time has become one of his favourite parts of the year, and he’s never far behind when it’s time to check on the trees or sort through crates of fruit.
Their love for the outdoors fuels us. It’s what drives us to keep carving out a bright and sustainable future here — not just for ourselves, but for them, should they choose to continue in farming.
Watching them grow up here — exploring, learning, and finding their own roles in this life — is nothing short of priceless. They’re developing skills, values, and resilience that will stay with them no matter where life leads.
To say we’re proud is an understatement!
